CHAMP John William

Private John William Champ. 62211 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment. The eldest son of John and Olive Champ who farmed at the now demolished Pear Tree Farm in the lower end of High Street. He was killed in action in the battle around Cambrai on the 11th October 1918, exactly 1 month before the cessation of hostilities. He is buried in the Naves communal cemetery extension near Cambrai Plot 4 Row D Grave 19. His half-brother, Eustace served in the Royal Artillery but died in a rail accident in October 1919 and is buried in Dilhorne. (See also Eustace ARBLASTER in the people section on this site) His parents moved to Dilhorne in North Staffordshire and they are buried in the churchyard there.

CURRIN Harold

8113 Private 7th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment. He fought at Gallipoli where he was wounded and taken on board ship. He died of his wounds on 6th November 1915 and was buried at sea, aged 18 years and 5 months. He is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, panel 170/171. Harold Currin was the son of Abraham, a railway signalman and Lucy of Blithbury Road. As a boy he sang in Colton Church choir.
