GILBERT Thomas

The Gilbert family of clockmakers was founded by Thomas Gilbert I in 1775. He began in St Johns Street, Lichfield, Staffordshire. He moved to Wellington Street, Rugeley, Staffordshire in 1793 where he remained until 1818. He was apprenticed to Thomas Stripling of Lichfield in 1765. The young Gilbert was the nephew Hannah Gilbert who married Thomas Stripling. Thomas Gilbert worked with his aunt at Lichfield. Thomas married and had two sons, William I and Thomas II.

William Gilbert I was apprenticed to Robert Sutton of Stafford in 1779. He had a son William II who is listed as working at Marlpits, Rugeley between 1841 and 1854.

Thomas Gilbert II worked in Wellington Street, Rugeley, probably starting with his father in 1814 and was there until 1842. Thomas II had two sons, George Verough and James I.

Geroge Verough Gilbert and Thomas William Gilbert (possibly Thomas II) worked in Upper Brook Street, Rugeley between 1851 and 1884 in the clock and watch trade. The brothers are also listed separately.

George Vernough Gilbert had two sons, Charles and Thomas III who both worked with their father at Upper Brook Street, Rugeley from 1861 to 1880. The company then became G.V.Gilbert and Son in 1881 until 1889. In the 1881 census Thomas II was 69 years old. Charles Gilbert was working at Upper Brook Street, Rugeley from 1900 onwards.

From the above it is reasonable to assume that the clock from Colton School was made at Upper Brook Street, Rugeley.

He was a member of the crew of the SS Pomeranian, a converted liner, that was sailing in April 1918 from London to St John’s, Newfoundland. This ship was being used to convey supplies to Britain. On 15th April 1918 she was torpedoed by a U boat 12 miles South West of Portland Bill. All but one of the 56 crew members lost their lives. He is commemorated on the Halifax (Nova Scotia) memorial.
