Mansell Lydia
Miss Lydia Mansell was appointed as an assistant teacher to help teach the infants in 1895. She had previously been teaching at the Edgmond National (Church of England) school near Newport and had served her apprenticeship in a girls school in Newport. She passed her first year examination in 1892. She lodged with the village blacksmith and his family. She left the village school on August 30th 1901 to be married. At this time female teachers could not teach once they were married. The school log book records that she was ‘presented with a Biscuit Barrel which had been subscribed for entirely by the children. She also received a present from the Rector and the Teachers.’ See the photograph of Miss Mansell and her class of 1898. MIDDLETON James
James Middleton was not born in Colton and by assumption it is thought that he was a cousin of a family that lived in the now demolished cottages at Bank Top. We do know that he was a private in the North Staffordshire Regiment and served in the 1st battalion. He has previously served as a regular soldier. He was amongst the casualties, it is thought, of an explosion of mortar shells in the 26th November 1916 and has no known grave. He is commemorated in the Loos Memorial to the missing.
