ROWLEY Thomas 1886-1916

Thomas Rowley (KIA 1916) and Albert George Rowley (below) were from two generations of the same family. Thomas was the son of Henry Rowley and Jane, nee Williscroft. The grandfather of Thomas was the great grandfather of Albert George.

Thomas’s father Henry was a tan yard worker and later became a farm worker.

Thomas enlisted as a private in the 1st Battalion North Staffordshire Regement. He had for a time previously served as a regular soldier in the same regiment.

In July and August 1916 fierce battles were fought in the Somme region of northern France. Thomas was killed on 31st August 1916 and has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. His name appears on the village War Memorial with that of a distant cousin, Albert George.

ROWLEY Thomas 1868-1951

The Family Tree of Thomas Rowley (1868-1951) and his wife Annie nee Beasley (1865-1934) is being researched by their great-granddaughter, Debbie Rowley. An outline appears on the site: [http://www.swmbo55.tribalpages.com) and further information can be obtained by contacting me at swmbo55@hotmail.com.

Thomas was born in Colton and was baptised in Colton Church in December 1886; his wife (Sarah) Annie was born in Chard in Somerset. They married in Somerset in 1890. Thomas and Annie had five children: Edward (1890-1947), Reginald (1892-1963), Albert (1894-1918), (Millicent) Kate (1897-1982) and Wilfred (1899-1970). Albert was killed on The Somme in 1918 (see above). Edward, Reginald and Wilfred were all also soldiers in the Great War as well as all being policemen; Kate also married a policeman!

Reg married Nellie Whitehouse (1897-1989) in Birmingham in 1923; they had four children: Eileen (1924-1993), Reginald (1926-1986), Louis (1928-1998) and Colin (1930-2001). The younger generations have now reached the furthest corners of the world – Colin’s children are in Canada and Guatemala; Louis’ are in Australia and England; Eileen’s and Reg’s are also in the UK.

The generations continue to form as Louis’ granddaughters Catherine and Laura are proud mothers of Kaylin and Isabelle, respectively, and Eileen’s grandson Jeremy has also recently announced the birth of a daughter.
