SEATON Abdiel 1820-74
Abdiel Seaton became Rector of Colton on 16th July 1849. He was married to Harriet Lucy [nee Palmer] see separate entry. When they arrived in Colton they already had 3 children. He instigated the rebuilding of the church some two years later and provided a considerable som of money towards the cost. He purchased 3 medieval misercords from Tenby in Pembrokeshire which were incorporated in the sanctuary of the church. He was responsible for establishing the first Harvest Festival at Colton and what a day of celebration this was! After the untimely death of Harriet Lucy he married again to Ellen Jordan Lang, see separate entry, and following her death he married once more. He was the father of seventeen children many of whom died either in infancy or childhood, see more entries. Abdiel died at Colton Rectory on 17th September 1874. There is a beautiful memorial window dedicated to his memory in the church.
SEATON Constance Elizabeth 1863-68
Constance was the daughter of Abdiel an Ellen. She died at Colton April 1868 and was buried on April 22nd aged 4 years 9 months.
SEATON Ellen Jordan 1836-70
Ellen was the second wife of Abdiel. She was the mother of 9 of Abdiel’s children. All but 3 of these children died before attaining their 5th birthday. Two of her daughters are buried at Colton, see separate entries. There was only one child, a daughter, who survived into old age. It is known by the author of this information that Ellen suffered much ill-health during the last 10 years of her short life. Ellen died on January 20th 1870 and was buried on January 27th
SEATON Frances Mable 1862-81
Frances was the daughter of Abdiel and Ellen. She died at Sunbury on Thames but is buried in the Old Burial Ground at Colton. She died January 1881 ages 18 years.
SEATON Francis James 1857-60
Francis was the 7th child born to Abdiel and Harriet. He had been born shortly before his mothers death. He died on January 20th 1860 and was buried on January 28th, aged 2 years 3 months.
SEATON Harriet Lucy 1821-57
Abdeal Seaton’s first wife Harriet was born in Lichfield and baptised at St. Mary’s Church in the city centre on 29th May 1821. She bore 7 children to Abdiel between 1845 and 1857. She died October 8th 1857 shortly after the birth of her 7th child. In the chancel of the church is a stained glass window to her memory.
SEATON Helen Lucy1856-1908
Helen was born at Colton Rectory. She was the 6th child of Abdiel and Harriet. She is buried in the Old Burial Ground. Helen had not lived in Colton during her adult years. She died on June 28th 1908
SEATON Margaret Louisa 1855-1920
Margaret was born at Colton Rectory the 5th child of Abdiel and Harriet. She lived in Colton all her life. Margaret took an active part in church life. She played the organ and acted as choir mistress. During World War I she assisted with the nursing of wonded soldiers at Ravenhill House in Brereton. The latter years of her life was spent at Colton Cottage. She was highly respeced by the whole community. Margaret is buried in the Old Burial Grounds.
